Los Arcos Snorkeling for Beginners: What to Expect
How a snorkel outing at Los Arcos works, what to confirm about equipment and supervision, and how to prepare as a beginner.
By Vallarta Roots · Published
Los Arcos Marine Park, south of Puerto Vallarta, is a protected area of granite islands in Banderas Bay and a popular first snorkeling spot. Beginners can enjoy it if they are comfortable in the water, use proper equipment and follow the guide. Sea conditions change daily, so visibility and marine life are never guaranteed.
How a Los Arcos snorkel outing works
You travel by boat to the rock formations, receive a briefing and enter the water near the islands. Time in the water depends on conditions and the guide’s judgment. Afterward, you return to the boat and head back to shore.
Our Snorkel Los Arcos + City Tour combines this time on the water with a private introduction to Puerto Vallarta, with snorkel gear and boat time included.
What to confirm before you go
- That snorkel equipment is included and that masks fit properly.
- Whether life jackets or flotation vests are available—beginners should use one.
- How the guide supervises swimmers in the water.
- What happens if sea conditions are not suitable on your date.
- Any age requirements or recommendations for children.
Are you ready to snorkel?
You do not need previous experience, but you should be comfortable floating and breathing calmly in open water. If you are not a confident swimmer, tell us in advance and stay close to the guide with a flotation vest. Snorkeling is not suitable for everyone—people with heart or breathing conditions, or who are pregnant, should consult a doctor first.
Beginner tips
- Practice breathing through the snorkel while floating near the boat.
- Spit or use defogger on your mask so it does not fog.
- Move slowly and float rather than kicking hard.
- Never touch or stand on coral or rocks; it is a protected area.
- Signal the guide right away if you feel tired or uncomfortable.
What to bring
- Swimsuit and towel
- Reef-friendly sunscreen, applied well before entering the water
- A rash guard or T-shirt for sun protection
- Motion-sickness remedy if you are sensitive on boats
- A dry bag for your phone
About sea conditions
Visibility, currents and waves change with weather, season and tides. Some days the water is clear; other days it is cloudy or rough. Port authorities can close navigation for weather. A responsible operator will change or postpone the plan if conditions are not safe.
