Día de Muertos in Puerto Vallarta

History, altars and respectful ways to experience this living Mexican tradition.

Día de Muertos honors people who have died through remembrance, family traditions and public expressions that vary across Mexico. It is not the same celebration as Halloween.

Roots and meaning

The tradition reflects Indigenous and Catholic influences developed over centuries. UNESCO recognizes the Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead as intangible cultural heritage.

Understanding an ofrenda

Altars may include photographs, candles, marigolds, favorite foods and personal objects. Each family or community brings its own meaning; there is no single required design.

Visit respectfully

Public displays can be enjoyed openly, while family observances deserve privacy. Ask before photographing people or private altars and follow local guidance at cemeteries and events.
