Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port to the Malecón: How to Plan Your Visit
The logistics: where your ship docks, how far downtown is, transportation options and how to get back on time.
By Vallarta Roots · Published
Most large cruise ships in Puerto Vallarta dock at the Maritime Terminal near Marina Vallarta, north of downtown. The Malecón and Historic Downtown are several kilometers south, so you will need a taxi, a pre-arranged private ride, a bus or a tour transfer to get there. Travel time is an estimate that depends on traffic—plan your return with a buffer.
Know the three waterfront areas
Visitors often mix these up:
| Place | What it is | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise Maritime Terminal | Where most cruise ships dock | North of downtown, next to Marina Vallarta |
| Marina Vallarta | Marina, condos, restaurants and a waterfront walkway | Beside the terminal |
| Los Muertos Pier and downtown piers | Tourist piers for smaller boats and water taxis | Romantic Zone / Downtown, south end of the Malecón |
How far is the Malecón from the cruise port?
Downtown is roughly a short drive south along the main coastal avenue. In light traffic the ride can be quick; at busy times it can take considerably longer. We recommend treating any time estimate as a guide only and checking with your driver.
Transportation options
Taxi
Taxis wait near the terminal exit. Agree on the fare before you get in and confirm the destination—say “Malecón” or “Centro.”
Pre-arranged private transportation
A private driver can meet you at an agreed point outside the terminal, which is useful for families or groups. Confirm the meeting point and return time in writing before your cruise.
Public bus
Local buses run along the main avenue toward downtown. They are inexpensive but can be crowded and are less predictable on a tight schedule.
Ship or independent tour transfer
If you book a tour, transportation is usually part of it. Ask exactly where you will be met and dropped off.
Plan your route downtown
Many visitors ask to be dropped at the north end of the Malecón and then walk south toward the main plaza, the church and Isla del Cuale. This lets you see the waterfront without backtracking. Agree on a pickup point at the south end for the return.
Getting back to the ship
The return is where good planning matters most:
- Confirm all-aboard time and whether ship time matches local time.
- Leave downtown with extra time—afternoon traffic can build.
- Keep your cruise card and identification handy at the terminal entrance.
- Save the port agent’s phone number in case of delays.
Frequently asked questions
Can I walk from the cruise port to the Malecón?
It is a long walk along a busy avenue and not practical for most visitors in the heat. A taxi, private ride or bus is the usual choice.
Is Marina Vallarta the same as the cruise terminal?
No. Marina Vallarta is the neighborhood and marina next to the terminal. The terminal is where ships dock.
Where do water taxis leave from?
Many leave from Los Muertos Pier in the Romantic Zone, south of downtown—not from the cruise terminal.
